Shift Assignment
RNs are responsible for the assignment and oversight of staff on the units.
Shift assignments are to be completed at the beginning of the shift and posted immediately following Huddle.
This is our Shift Assignment Sheet
Let’s break this down into 3 sections.
The first section we are going to look at is the middle section. This is the section to record the patients assigned to the RN. It is recommended that the RN list the patients by Pod.
Patients on 123 Pod
Patients on ABC pod
If a pod is SPLIT, you will need an additional sheet to document the patients and staff assigned to that pod. This is because our sheet is divided by techs assigned to pods.
If you have A and B pod with 2 kiddos on C pod, you will need one sheet for A&B then a second sheet for C pod with those kiddos.
The top section is to record the staff assigned to those patients by pod..
Nurses work 12 hour shifts and techs work 8 hour shifts. Because of this, the nurse will list the techs for both shifts they work with.
Day shift
Evening Shift

*The night shift nurse has an assignment sheet listing the evening shift and the night shift techs.
The techs listed under the RN are assigned to the patients directly below them. You can see the techs and patients assigned to them in each highlighted box.
The third section we will review is to assign 1:1 care. During most shifts, the nurse will be responsible for 2 techs and 1 float. Those 3 staff members will rotate through the 1:1 care. (Nurses and UCs are to also assist with 1:1 care). In this example, Susy Q needs 1:1 care.
Beth Smith is the first MHT assigned to 1:1. Mary Jones is assigned to that pod and Terry Ross is the float tech.
Beth works as the 1:1 until 9:15 then she switches with Mary Jones on the pod. At 1115, Mary switches with Terry as the float.
Rotate through the techs / staff so no one person is sitting 1:1 longer than 2 hours at a time.

Staffing assignments are to be made by the RN and posted at the beginning of the shift.
